Premium e juice vaping enthusiasts of 2015 are taking part in the golden era of alternative nicotine consumption. Even with only being introduced 10 years prior, the e-cigarette & premium e juices market is still very much the wild west frontier having gone relatively unregulated by health agencies. The primary motivation for many vaping enthusiasts is quitting smoking and saving lives.
The fact that so many seasoned smokers fail repeatedly to quit on their own, now drives the demand on e-cigarettes to an ever increasing high with one in 10 adults having at least tried to quit with e-cigarettes. e-Cigarettes have fallen under increased attack recently by various groups that have a lot to lose on e-cigarette sales. It may come as a shock to many that Federal, state and local governments make more money off tobacco sales than the tobacco companies themselves, due in part to the Master Settlement Agreement payments and taxes.
According to Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association (AVA) “The government is the biggest player in the tobacco industry because they get around $40 billion annually from tobacco,” Conley said. Conley goes on to say “The tobacco industry, meanwhile, nets only $9 billion in profits. So the state and federal governments have a huge role in not seeing cigarette sales decline.”
The huge elephant in the room that no one appears to be talking about is who is ultimately losing this current war over money, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and all the attached mud slinging of health concerns. Humanity is the ultimate victim in all this. Today when we look through out history the lessons for humanity are clear. Though they may not have been as clear at the time of their practice. We can look back with clarity and affirmed judgement on these points in history and feel confident good triumphed over evil. Today we clearly view slavery as an evil and an appalling act of cruelty against humanity, but at the time it was viewed as an opportune financial resource for increased profit. With all the e-cigarette battles waging on in our courts, people are now scrambling to question what side of the battlefield they should position themselves. The real truth is, are they really asking the right questions here, when the very rules of the battlefield itself (the judgement of the courts) is called into question.
We the people are the foundation of society and government. We rely on our courts and government to be held to a higher standard as the guardians and highest authority protecting humanity. But in many cases, historically people only appear to be tools, used as weapons in proclaimed just causes and who’s ultimate use only translates to nothing more than an excuse for further profit. We have to take a historical tour though cigarette history to know how we have come to find ourselves in this appalling state of affairs.
Does History show cigarettes to be the cause of cancer and what did our courts do to stop it.
During the 1998 Medicaid lawsuits the Department of Justice’s criminal inquiry gained access to tobacco industry internal documents.
In a memo stolen by Merrell Williams from Brown & Williamson law firm was leaked to Congress by Dick Scruggs and Mike Moore. The document is an internal Brown & Williamson memo from July 17, 1963. It stated “At the best, the probabilities are that some combination of constituents of smoke will be found conducive to the onset of cancer or to create an environment in which cancer is more likely to occur”.
In an Auerbach document, written on April 3, 1970, a British tobacco company, Gallaher Limited summarizes the results of a smoking study conducted on dogs that clearly shows that cigarette companies had medical evidence that smoking causes lung cancer in animals. In excerpts from this document “beagles which are made to inhale fresh whole cigarette smoke” revealed “we believe that the Auerbach work proves beyond reasonable doubt that fresh whole cigarette smoke is carcinogenic to dog lungs and therefore it is highly likely that it is carcinogenic to human lungs” which goes on to read “we are of the opinion that Auerbach’s work proves beyond all reasonable doubt the causation of lung cancer by smoke“.
In each of the above leaked documents, it clearly shows big tobacco was aware of the facts and had full knowledge that people were dying from the use of their products. This discovery was shocking and for most would have appeared to be clear call to action. So what did our government and courts do about this clear discovery? Did our courts deem cigarettes a death threat to humanity like Cocaine and Heroin or to a lessor extend a gateway drug like Marijuana, no they just proceeded to profit from the deaths and are still profiting from the deaths of our citizens today. What started as a noble story of how two small-town Mississippi lawyers declared war on Big Tobacco, mutated into a gold rush for financial gain in Medicaid lawsuits. It is a sad turn of events to know this was at least for an hour, originally inspired to avenge a loved one dying in a hospital from cancer.
It took 3 years in the making to rally every state to the fight against big tobacco. On 6/20/97 the tobacco companies and state attorney generals announce a landmark $368.5 billion settlement agreement. The states settled their Medicaid lawsuits against the tobacco industry for the recovery of their tobacco-related health-care costs, and in exchange proceeded to exempt the tobacco companies from any future private tort liability regarding possible harm caused by tobacco use.
Three appalling issues and historical lessons arise from this settlement agreement. Number one, history now shows big corporations are not to be trusted to act in good faith and are more than willing to profit from the deaths of citizens. Number two and even more appalling is that history will now also show that the government in full possession of the facts is also willing to continue to take money while turning a blind eye to those same ongoing citizen deaths. If it were not so, they would have simply made cigarettes illegal or at least prescription only. Instead as number three, they settled to remove the future rights of citizens to sue big tobacco for any private tort liability all while continuing to profit from those very same deaths.
According to the Center for Disease Control there are more than 480,000 U.S. deaths attributable each year to cigarette smoking. In contrast according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse between 1999 and 2013 there were 120,357 U.S. deaths attributable to cocaine and heroin combined. That is 400% the number of people dying to cigarettes each year compared to all the cocaine and heroin use from 1999 to 2013 and 3600% more death in 2013 alone. We made cocaine and heroin illegal because of the public health risk. How can we justify the government taking $368.5 billion dollar payouts when we are seeing these staggering figures of people dying.
To put this into perspective. The government is profiting from more U.S. citizens dying each year from smoking than all the U.S. citizens that gave their lives to protect the very standards this government was suppose to stand for with the second world war killing 406,000 people. Our soldiers fought and died, fighting against this very same exploitation. When our troops finally freed the remaining Jewish people from the concentration camps, more than 11 million people were killed in the The Holocaust. Our troops were absolutely appalled at what was allowed to happen in those camps, so much so the troops actually forced the surrounding German citizens to clean up the mess of bodies by hand.
In contrast when we open our eyes and see the truth, that by our government not simply making cigarettes illegal or prescription only when it was discovered that they undeniably cause cancer in 1998, our government and big tobacco has caused and profited from the deaths of more than 8,160,000 citizens to a profitable tune of $680,000,000,000 from 1998 to 2015 and this is not to mention the original $368.5 billion in settlement agreement. Bringing the potential price to turn a blind eye to over 8 million deaths from cigarettes from 1998 to 2015 to over 1 trillion dollars. This clearly shows the government’s willingness to accept the equivalent of $128,492 for each U.S. cigarette attributed death. According to Dr Robert N Proctor “The cigarette is the deadliest artefact in the history of human civilisation” So then after 15 years later, where did all that cigarette money go?
Does vaping cause cancer or other health related issues
Does vaping cause Cancer?
First the good news is there is no evidence that nicotine causes cancer. But, according to StillBlowingSmoke.org the Surgeon General’s Report says nicotine may contribute to the hardening of the arteries, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke. By constricting blood vessels, nicotine causes blood pressure to rise. Nicotine may raise the risk for life-threatening complications and reduced blood flow to the fetus. It can also have lasting negative consequences on brain development when the baby grows up. Nicotine can affect the way your body digests sugar, leading to insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The human brain reaches maturity at around age 25. Before then, it is especially vulnerable to nicotine. Long-term effects of adolescent nicotine use may include changes to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that handles decision-making.
Does vaping contain Chromium 4 and Nickel?
The good news is vape juice doesn’t appear to actually contain Chromium 4 and Nickel. More recently there have been doctors going before the media claiming that vaping contains Chromium 4 and Nickel, citing these were the results and findings of a study by Constantinos Sioutas. This is simply not the case and in Constantinos Sioutas’s actual study he states “Our results demonstrate that overall electronic cigarettes seem to be less harmful than regular cigarettes, but their elevated content of toxic metals such as nickel and chromium do raise concerns,” Sioutas goes on to reveal his expected determination of the actual source of the Chromium 4 and Nickel stating “The metal particles likely come from the cartridge of the e-cigarette devices themselves – which opens up the possibility that better manufacturing standards for the devices could reduce the quantity of metals in the smoke,”
Does vaping contain Formaldehyde?
The first good news is it appears there is no Formaldehyde released when vaping VG(Vegetable Glycerin) at any voltage. The second good news is it appears there is no Formaldehyde released when vaping PG (Propylene Glycol) at reasonable low vaping voltages of (3.3 V), studies did not detect the formation of any formaldehyde-releasing agents. The bad news is “cloud chasers” beware. Because in that same study at higher voltages (5.0 V), a mean (±SE) of 380±90 μg per sample (10 puffs) of formaldehyde was detected as formaldehyde-releasing agents.
What can we take away from these findings. Just like anything else in life, if something is used irresponsibly in excess it will usually result in negative side effects. In the complete study according to The New England Journal of Medicine “Here we present results of an analysis of commercial e-liquid vaporized with the use of a “tank system” e-cigarette featuring a variable-voltage battery. The aerosolized liquid was collected in an NMR spectroscopy tube (10 50-ml puffs over 5 minutes; 3 to 4 seconds per puff). With each puff, 5 to 11 mg of e-liquid was consumed, and 2 to 6 mg of liquid was collected. At low voltage (3.3 V), we did not detect the formation of any formaldehyde-releasing agents (estimated limit of detection, approximately 0.1 μg per 10 puffs). At high voltage (5.0 V), a mean (±SE) of 380±90 μg per sample (10 puffs) of formaldehyde was detected as formaldehyde-releasing agents.”
One has to question these studies, does everything burning release appreciable levels of Formaldehyde? What about girl scouts and boy scouts sitting around a camp fire, breathing in second hand campfire smoke. What are the risks we need to consider in the big cities with exhaust emitted from cars or worse yet diesel trucks. It is interesting to note according to the Minnesota Department of Health, when you burn materials such as natural gas, wood, gasoline or tobacco, formaldehyde gas is released. Formaldehyde in small concentrations is a normal part of our environment. Outdoor air levels are usually between 0.002 to 0.006 parts per million (ppm) in suburban areas.
Does vaping flavors draw in under aged minors?
The good news is no more so than candied alcohol, wine coolers, butterscotch schnapps or Bailey’s Irish cream. This is why we pass legal smoking, vaping and drinking laws to restrict access and keep these substances out of the hands of minors. A determined minor will always get access to what they want. It’s the responsibility of the parents to set strict rules about their use. It is naive and very short sighted to even consider regulating the flavors of ecigarettes when compared to the alcohol industry. The very suggestion is like saying, well we knew that wasn’t going to pass, but we had to try. Giving the over all appearance that those that are pushing such bills are doing so to intentionally place red herrings in the legislative process.
It is time for the general public to really open our eyes and see what is going on around us before those freedoms are snatched away from us. If we measure innovative success by the number of lives we’ve saved, then potentially we are on the verge of one of the greatest discoveries in mankind’s history.
Notes to the general public and media:
VAPEMagazine.com welcomes emails at standardizedtesting@VAPEMAgazine.com of any evidence of research performed on the core base ingredients of ecigarettes, independent of faultily made hardware. We are looking for: 1) A study of the emissions of pure VG (Vegetable Glycerin) vaporized at all voltages. 2) A study of the emissions of pure PG (Propylene Glycol) vaporized at all voltages. 3) A study of the emissions of pure nicotine vaporized at all voltages. 4) Finally a study of the primary 3 ingredients mix in varied balanced mixtures and vaporized at all voltages. It is the strong believe of this magazine, that if we can establish a baseline of research testing of the base ingredients, we can build a strong foundation of understanding of those core ingredients and establish ensure a safe standard for vaping that will save millions of lives.
